The chair will be a space to discuss and promote activities focused on the universe of arts and cultural management. Diplomat and essayist, former National Secretary of Culture and author of the bill to encourage culture that bears his name, Sérgio Paulo Rouanet will be the first holder of the Olavo Setubal Chair of Art, Culture and Science. An initiative of USP's Institute for Advanced Studies (IEA) in partnership with Itaú Cultural, this is USP's first chair of art and culture. It is a space to discuss and promote activities focused on the universe of arts and cultural management. The objective is to encourage interdisciplinary reflections on academic, artistic-cultural and social themes at regional and global levels. The official launch took place on February th, at a meeting in the Rectory building, which was attended by the new Chair holder, Sérgio Paulo Rouanet; the director of the Itaú Cultural Institute, Eduardo Saron Nunes; the rector of USP, Marco Antonio Zago; vice-rector Vahan Agopyan; the director of the IEA, Martin Grossmann, among other representatives of the University and the cultural institution.

According to Marcos Cuzziol, manager of the institution's Innovation Center/Observatory, the partnership recognizes the dedicated attention that Itaú Cultural has given to the management and formation of cultural policy and is part of the years of the Itaú Cultural Observatory, to be celebrated this year. The Itaú Cultural Observatory was created in with a focus on management, economics and cultural policies. Since then, it has promoted studies and debates on these topics, encouraging reflection on culture in its various aspects and analyzing national indicators.
Since , it has been running a free specialization course in cultural management in partnership with the UNESCO Chair of Cultural Policies, the Cooperation of the University of Girona, in Spain, and with the support of the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI). To chair With a minimum duration of five years, the chair will have the IEA as its headquarters. It is made up of two programs: Global Networks of Young Researchers and Leaders in Art, Culture and Science. The total budget forecast is R$ million, funded by Itaú Cultural. An annual allocation of R$, is planned for each program. Even before the official launch of the chair, part of its activities had already begun. The Intercontinental Academia, opened in April with a stage in São Paulo, is part of the Global Networks of Young Researchers program, based on the training of new leaders. It aims to foster and promote interdisciplinary research by young researchers up to years of age. The Leaders in Art, Culture and Science program follows the pattern adopted by the José Bonifácio Chair, installed at USP in Each year, it will be held by an exponent from the artistic, cultural, political, social, economic or academic world, Rouanet being the first of these names.
